The Truth About Coaching
Through my daily travels and coaching practice at Goddess of Light Spiritual Life Coaching Inc, I have learned that many people have different perceptions regarding coaching. Not understanding the concept of coaching and what is involved could lead to disappointment and may even adversely affect our lives in more ways than one.
Some people are of the opinion that coaching is the same as counselling, mentoring, and training. Coaching is for people who are underperformers only, and coaches tell people what to do or give advice.
In this blog, I will share with you a few myths about coaching. Keep reading to know more.
What is coaching?
Coaching is the same as counseling, and mentoring. The truth is, it is not. Firstly, Let’s take a look at its definition. “International Coaching Federation defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. The process of coaching often unlocks previously untapped sources of imagination, productivity, and leadership.” The coaching process does not include advising or counseling, and focuses instead on individuals or groups setting and reaching their own objectives. Counseling, on the other hand, is a form of ‘talk therapy’ and makes recommendations for a course of action. Similarly, mentoring is the process of helping and giving advice to a younger or less experienced person.
The myths!
1. Coaching is for people who are underperformers only
As said by Google CEO Eric Schmidt, “Everyone should have a coach.” The truth is, every successful person in sports, politics, business, entertainment, religion, and life has or had coaches. Individuals who seek coaching aren’t just weak people with something wrong with them. Contrary to that, there’s something very right about them, and it’s enabling them to leap ahead. Coaching, therefore, is for anyone who would like to enhance their life in any way.
According to Elite Daily publication, the following eleven celebrities all have personal coaches: Oprah Winfrey, Nia Long, Danny Bonaduce, Von Miller Metallica, Leonardo DiCaprio, Bill Clinton, Serena Williams, Andre Agassi, Hugh Jackman, Chuck Liddell, but the list goes on.
2. Coaches give advice and tell clients what to do
The truth is coaching is about guiding the client through the process of self-discovery.
To facilitate this process, coaches ask their clients powerful open-ended questions which aid them in finding the answers that are already within them rather than giving advice. In this way, coaches guide their clients to discover themselves, identify any blocks, negative thought patterns, and limiting beliefs, and how to overcome them to achieve their desired results.
Takeaway
Often people hire coaches because they want to achieve a certain goal or make life transformational changes in one or more areas of their lives, and coaches do help clients create doable plans with specific timelines enabling them to take concrete action toward those goals or transformations.
